Fortuna out of the Champions League

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has overruled UEFA's decision, so now Olympique Lyonnais will play instead of Fortuna in the UEFA Womens Champions League quater-finals.

It was a deeply shocked Fortuna leader who received the bad news Thursday afternoon, the Champions League dream was over. CAS have cancelled the decision in UEFA's appeal court that gave Fortuna a victory in their protest against Olympique Lyonnais's use of two Norwegian players. The first result of the games between Fortuna and Olympique is back in stand, so with less than two weeks before the quarter-finals against the Italian team Torres Calcio, Fortuna have been thrown out of the Champions League.

Neither Fortuna or the Danish Football Association have seen the reason as to why CAS made such a decision. At the moment the official response has been silent. From DBU, the leader for DBU tournaments says:

"We are surprised over the decision from CAS to support Olympique Lyonnais, as it seems their decision differs from FIFA's rules for international club change and FIFA's definition of amatuer players. But we need to point out, that as yet we haven't received the grounds for the decision."

In Fortuna we have no understanding for the decision from CAS, that seems to have to do with the highly waged Norwegian players being only amatuers.

It is of course a huge disappointment for the whole club, along with the players who will now miss out on playing in the Champion League quarter-finals. Not to mention the small fortune it has cost the club, like plane tickets to Sardinia that cannot be refunded. Along with the wasted energy and hours spent putting together a quarter-final at short notice and in the worst winter months we have seen for quiet some time.
